Racing HO scale slot cars at home with my Uncle Frank
Back when I was growing up technology was a very hot topic, because of the space program and the race to land a man on the moon. Technology was literally in your face everyday because of all the press and media attention given to the Apollo Program. I just soaked it all up. I read anything and everything I could about rockets, planes, trains, cars, and boats. If it had complex moving parts I was into it. I also worked as a helper in a gas station on my summers off from school. I handed the mechanic his tools while he worked on the cars in the garage. I also built and raced 1/24 scale slot cars too.
There is no doubt in my mind based on my past drawings, that the 5th grade is the year my enthusiasm for drawing machinery details hit its peak. This is a belt drive diesel engine switcher locomotive. (Click to Enlarge)

As my drawing skills progressed I had become fascinated by all types of complex powered vehicles. Here is a drawing of a motorcycle in pen. Note the engine and drive chain details. Back in the late 60's the Hells Angels and Biker gangs were a hot subject in the media. So too were motorcycles. (Click to Enlarge)
