Lost in Space aired from Sept 1965 to March 1968

Lost in Space was produced by Irwin Allen. I loved watching his other TV shows too; like Time Tunnel, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and Land of the Giants. These were all shows based on some kind of weird science theme mixed with high tech gadgetry, which was my cup of tea. Lost in Space was about the Robinson family, a family of space pioneers sent off into outer space on a flying saucer like ship called the Jupiter 2. Their mission was to colonize a planet in the Alpha Centauri star system. The ship was sabotaged during launch, and an explosion blew it wildly off course.

For the rest of the series the Robinson family spent their days going from planet to planet trying to find their way back to earth. What attracted me most to this show was the Robot who was also the best friend and companion of the young boy Will Robinson. Dr. Zachary Smith was an antagonist who was constantly goading Will and the Robot into misadventure. These little side adventures often turned into catastrophes that provided the basis for many of the shows plots.

The robot in the show made me aware that computers could be used not only to process data but also to make things move. To me that spelled FUN! Today I make part of my living installing and programming industrial computers into high-speed product production machines. These machines have many robotic like movements that are controlled by these computers.
