" We got the wrong part. Now what do we do?" This is the part where a lot of maintenance departments get lost, but not where I work. Most big firms have layer upon layer of high level managers stuck in huge beauracratic system that is largely devoted to finding excuses as to why an event did not go right as opposed to asking "Hey what can we do now to fix this now?" Where I work I have the freedom to buy, obtain, or do what ever needs to be done to complete a project. My solution here was very simple. All I did was envision in my mind the type of magnet holder that was needed to work with the part we were supplied and yet would also be able to activate the switch on the machine. In a matter of minutes I made a a 3D isometric sketch of the part so the concept is easily understood by all parties involved. I gave the sketch to our machinist. He goes to the machine and makes some measurements and in a very short time he makes a new magnet holder that looks just like the one in sketch I made.
We have a good maintenance team where I work. Before I came to this company the only way they would buy a used machine was with proof that it runs and had some kind of guarantee. Now they by used machines that are completely dead, in pieces, with parts missing, and no documentation, because they know I can make it work no matter what. Our margins, and prices are better than the competition because our machinery costs are lower.
