The Vulcan 80-64c 6 Axis Vertical boring mill

This was a very large 6 axis vertical boring mill project known as the Vulcan 80-64c. That means 80 inch swing over the bed with a 64 inch height clearance under the cross rail. Weighing in at 35 tons fully assembled this machine was really big. S&S bought this machine from China without the electrics. The original machine used 218 relays in a separate cabinet to control all the functions. It had a 60 HP spindle drive and three 5HP variable speed axis drives, working with 6 electromagnetic clutches on planetary gear drives in each head. They wanted to exhibit this machine at the machine tool show in Chicago in September 1982. The shop manager was given the schematics and asked to design a new control system for the machine while it was being built in China. He could not do it, the schematics were too confusing. They turned to me. I said forget the schematics and asked for a description in English of the machine functions. From that I designed a whole new system using just 64 relays instead of 218. The machine was a big hit at the show.
