I could see that at the heart of this control system was a circuit board. This turned out to be a clutch/brake sequencer. Packaging machines incorporate many different types of rapid on off movements during their operation to create a package. The use of a clutch brake sequencer is one of the simplest and most reliable ways to achieve this on off action. I have worked with many different brands and variations of these systems before, and it is obvious that this is what controls the rapid on off sequence of the sleeve feed sequence in this machine. At this point it would make no sense to try and obtain the factory original schematics on this machine, because it is clear it is no longer wired up in a manner that resembles the original, plus it would take time to get these documents, and the machine is needed now.
I decide that the clutch/brake sequencer board is the key control point on this machine. I call up the manufacturer of this board to speak to Tech Support. I get connected and tell them of my dilemma. They fax me a schematic of the circuit board. This tells me what all of its wiring points are for. From this point I start to make sketches of the electric system to see, which wires go where and to what devices they are attached. These drawings and sketches help increase my understanding of the entire machine as a whole as I move towards a solution.
